How to create ads from existing Instagram posts and Stories

Create Ads from Existing Instagram Feed and Stories Posts with Ads Manager

If you have an Instagram Feed or Stories post that is already published on your account, you can use that content for an ad.

Before you begin

  • You should avoid creating ads from posts featuring images greater than 8 MB.

  • You can only create ads from a single Feed or Stories post. You can't create a single ad from a post with multiple photos. You also won’t be able to create a single ad from multiple Stories posts using the carousel format with multiple cards.

  • You can use up to five of the following interactive elements: location sticker, hashtag sticker, tappable text and @mention stickers. Or you can use one countdown sticker. You can only use the polling sticker and the Swipe Up CTA on ads that are created without a pre-existing post. However, you should avoid using emojis, GIFs, music stickers, link stickers, more than one sticker and more complex creative tools.

  • If you use the Swipe Up feature in an existing Story, this feature will carry over when you turn the Story into an ad.

Create ads from existing Instagram content:

To turn an existing Instagram Feed or Stories post into an ad in Ads Manager:

  1. Go to Ads Manager.
  2. Follow the steps to create an ad as usual.
  3. At the Ad level under Identity, select the Instagram Account that has the content you'd like to use for your ad.
  4. Select Use Existing Post to see the Instagram Feed and Stories content you have available for your ad.
  5. Select the existing post or Story you’d like to use for you ad and click Continue.
  6. After you've reviewed your campaign, ad set and ad, click Publish.

Now, you’ve finished creating an ad from your existing Instagram Feed or Stories post.

Note1: You may have a Facebook and Instagram post of the same content. If you choose to create an ad from the existing Facebook post for an Instagram placement, your total engagement metrics (such as likes) will not show engagement from the Instagram post.

Note2: If you partner with creators on Instagram, you can also turn their existing Instagram Feed or Stories post into Branded Content ads. You can create ads from existing Instagram Branded Content Stories that include hashtags, @mentions and location tags.
